S2 Engine Teardown Pics!


Oh this pic shows a crankcase full of injector oil that had seeped past the pump into the cases. Good thing I never tried to get her started like this. It would have bent a rod (at a minimum) for sure!



So far so good. Tore down the engine last night (See Part 1 here). Before I started I did a leakdown test on the crankshaft seals and it was possibly the worst leaking crank I've seen yet. It went to 7 psi and held for about 10 seconds. Just awful. Should have held 6 PSI for 6 minutes. When I tried pulling the crank out of the block the rubber seals held on a little bit from suction and the crank moved inside them about 1/4 inch. Yikes! No wonder I could never get her to run worth a flip. The topend is essentially brand new. It's wierd working with such tiny parts after building 750's and 500's. This stuff is like jewelry compared to the bigger bikes. Hard to believe that 60+ Hp is fairly easily attainable.

S2 Rebuild Part 2: The Teardown

Finally Going to do the S2!!


Well I've decided to go ahead and disassemble the S2 for a "poor mans" rebuild. It won't be a full restoration in the sense that I'm returning it back to stock. It'll be more along the lines of a quick and economical cosmetic cleanup with a larger investment of time and money on the performance side. Right Now I'm thinking complete strip down. Blast and rattlecan the frame, engine cases and bodywork.

For the engine, I already have a fresh top end, brand new expansion chambers on the shelf and larger S3 carbs etc... The biggest expense will be getting the crank rebuilt (around $400) and a Boyer Branson ignition replacement (about $150). I've already done a ton of strip down work and taken lots of pics (which I'll post later tonight) the above pic is more or less my "before" picture of my starting point. Keep posted... MUCH more to follow!

Jim Knight's 4 cylinder H2


When is a triple NOT a triple? When Jim Knight decides to turn it into a four. This bike is so well made that you almost don't notice untill someone points it out to you.







A Kawasaki H2 1000!! A real work of Machine Art! Y can barely see the welded seam if you crawl under the bike. the pipes are perfectly symetrical. And he spared no effort on the fit and finish of the bike. Even if it was stock , the finish on this would still distinguish it.

Rics extremely fast RD400 posing at Deals Gap last year. That's a Chuck "Supertune" Quenzler built engine with SpecII pipes. I believe it's pushing upwards of 65 or 70 reliable horsepower in a very good handling and lightweight bike. Makes Ric extremely hard to keep up with on the Dragon.

Tomcat's Radical H1/H2 hybrid!


The Tomcat Loftis fire breather. I've personally seen this bike power wheelie at over 100 mph. H2 engine in an h1 frame. Pipes of his own design Giant reeds mated to radical porting and giant lectron carbs. A truly awesome "sleeper" with the 500 badges.

Got an email request for more info on the H1. Figured I'd just post a few of the restoration pictures from along the way... It's basically a total spare parts rebuild. Engine was totally rebuilt for a project that will remain unmentioned at this time (out of embarrassment mostly). This was a decent frame I scored so I built it up with parts I had around (mostly) and stuff I had to acquire..

Another Possible Project for sometime in the next year or so...


My first street legal 2 stroke. A 1972 Kawasaki S2 350. I rode the stink out of this bike for a few months till the crank seals went out. I didn't know much about them at the time so I had the top end rebuilt with NOS kawasaki pistons Igot offf E-bay for a LOT of $$. So It already has a fresh top end and some brand new Pro-Flo expansion Chambers (on the shelf) and some S3 carbs (a little larger but bolt-on). Need to get her apart and get the crankshaft off to Damon Kirkland (The Kawi Triple Crank GOD) for a rebuild. After that its lots of love and cosmetics really is all she'll need. Soon......
I did a lot of things wrong early on with this bike. I owe it to her to at least get her back on the road again. Even got me to Daytona once back in 99 or 2000 or... about 25 pounds ago :)
